Gourd, The Plant of DAO

by Yi Cun Master

I always want to paint gourds, carve gourds, so I planted a gourds in my. The gourd growing in the yard looks like a magic plant. It changed every day, and the growing gourds somewhat resembled  the human body, which was very interesting. In Chinese culture, people often say that the gourd is precious and contains spiritual energy.

Since it was the first year that we planted gourds we were inexperienced, we saw more than 100 ?on the vine and were quite happy. We thought it would produce more than 100 gourds. However later, they all grew very small, turned yellow and even fell on ground. We checked and realized we needed  to take away some fruits. In the end, we got only 7 gourds, and because we do not know how to air dry them, they are deflated. There is still a lot to learn.

Sometimes it’s quite a surprise. When I saw the gourds had deflated, I wondered if they had seeds in them. I shook a gourd but heard no sound. So, I thought, “Oh no, no seeds.” After a while, I cut the gourd open to make a scoop. When I opened it, to my surprise it was densely lined with gourd seeds. It didn’t make a sound when I shook it because the seeds were too full!

Calabash gourd was created as a gift to Iron Crutch Li (Li Tieguai).
